Consistent painful coughing?

I went to the doctor 2 days ago and my doctor said he found no signs of bronchitis or anything really. He thinks this is just a virus. He didn't prescribe anything, but this cough is so incredibly painful! It's hard to breath, and cough drops aren't helping. Could there be something he just didn't catch?
