The title and/or author of a book!?

A man falls down in a field and cuts his hand. He blacks out and when he wakes up, thinks nothing more. As the weeks go by, he becomes sensitive to light, an insomniac and craves raw meat. His girlfriend becomes worried and asks him to seek help. More time goes by and he starts having hallucinations of killing people and drinking their blood/eating their flesh. He becomes scared and checks himself into an asylum. With further probing, a doctor traces his sickness back to the night he cut his hand - on an infected splint from a stake used to kill a female vampire many years ago. The story is told from the man's point of view about how he slowly becomes a vampire himself and it's very heart wrenching.
