When you make Beef stew, is it better with a light brown, dark brown or just natural gravy?

I think I know how to make it with beef, carrots, potatoes and onions, but not sure how to make the gravy and I'm a beginner. I know to make the gravy you have to make the rue but I'm not sure how dark to cook it. Your opinions and advice are appreciated. Any other tips.
